Duo w/Javier Carmona @ Ryan's Bar, 21/09/10

Mark Hanslip - tenor saxophone/flute

Opening for Alex Ward's 'Predicate' quartet (with A.W. - guitar/compositions, Tim Hill - saxes, Dominic Lash - bass, Mark Sanders - drums)

We'll be playing the first set at 8.50pm, until about 9.20/25pm, before the 1+only Mr Ward's free-jazz-ish quartet play (presumably two sets of) new compositions, and no doubt a fair dollop of full-on group improvisation.

London
N16 0UL

Jeb Loy Nichols - vocals/guitar

Great gig... attentive audience, and the best the band have played together in a long time... was great to play with Fulvio again after some time off (!), I felt like we really hooked up on this one, as did the whole band

----------------------------------------------------------

w/Neil Metcalfe/Olie Brice/Javier Carmona @ Flim-Flam at Ryan's Bar 28/07/10

Neil Metcalfe - flute
Mark Hanslip - tenor sax
Olie Brice - double bass
Javier Carmona - drums/percussion

Fun gig.... Olie put this one together and seems very excited about the idea of it becoming an ongoing thing, just heard the recording and there are definitely some moments.... felt a little uncomfortable for me at times, partly due to the sound in the room but also because 3/4 of the band can very comfortably spend a lot of time in that super-pianissimo, very high-pitched abstract/textural area, which the tenor sax doesn't always lend itself to so well (or at least not in my hands!!), though this is probably just something I need to think about and work on.... some really exciting stuff though, and seemed to work quite naturally.... looking forward to doing some more soon!

w/Javier Carmona @ Charlie Wright's International Bar 22/07/10

First gig since going into the studio in June, felt very comfortable musically if not venue-wise, though this may have been in my head... thought it felt a bit strange playing completely free opposite a NY-ish modern-jazz type group, but was great to play anyway... since recording together the duo feels kind of more solid, though still challenging, Javier can turn things around in a split second if he feels like it... got some very nice comments from the few folk who came down to hear us too, which is always nice especially when playing in not entirely sympathetic surroundings...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Nostalgia 77, Greece 26/06/10

Alex Bonney - trumpet
Mark Hanslip - saxophone
Matthew Bourne - keyboards
Riaan Vosloo - bass
Tim Giles - drums

This gig was on a beach somewhere in Greece, about an hour outside Thessaloniki, can't be bad.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

TOM-MIX w/Veryan Weston @ Vortex 25/06/10

Mark Hanslip - saxophone
Olie Brice - double bass
Tony Marsh - drums

with Veryan Weston - piano

This was the first time we'd all played as a quartet (save for a play the day before).. some great moments, after about 15 mins of rummaging things really started to happen, and stayed there for a good while before a slightly unstable ending.. very happy that it happened, and hope it does again one day...!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Hurley/Mark Hanslip/Mark Sanders @ Fizzle at the Lamp Tavern, Birmingham 22/06/10

Mike Hurley - piano
Mark Hanslip - saxophone
Mark Sanders - drums

I loved this one, loads going on, plus the absence of a bass player created even more of a no-safety-net feeling about it.... will have to find a way of exploring this line-up further....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Twelves @ George IV 17/06/10

Riaan Vosloo - double bass
Mark Hanslip - tenor saxophone
Rob Updegraff - guitar
John Blease (subbing for Tim Giles) - drums

New CD 'The Adding Machine' will be coming out on Babel Records in September, below is a rough mix of one track 'Eyeballing'. We recorded it at The Way Studio in Hackney/London Fields, a great place if you don't need a piano and don't mind playing in a dead room.
